Writing

Available 11/24/23: Notorious Bakersfield, the book! I am working with raconteur Robert Petersen to turn his popular podcast “Notorious Bakersfield” into a volume of local lore, history, and legend that you’ll want to read even if your only impression of Bakersfield is from that song about the streets of Bakersfield.

Editing

Cover art for the book Memorial Star by Lee Woodriffe

Memorial Star tells the true story of Edwin R. Woodriffe, the first African-American FBI agent killed in the line of duty in the United States. I edited Lee Woodriffe’s masterful retelling of the unique challenges her father faced. True story: When I got the manuscript, I couldn’t put it down, and finished editing it in three days. It’s a riveting story that every American should read.

The Ethics of Investigative DNA

The introduction of consumer-focused DNA testing and social sharing of ancestry information has helped bring dozens of cold cases to a close. Despite its victories, the use of DNA for crime investigations poses several ethical quandaries. Is there an ethical way to use socially shared DNA in the state’s crime investigations?
